Royal Aircraft Factory BE2 and BE12 variants fighters of No 76 Squadron had Shipton available to them as a Home Defence landing ground during World War One, these aircraft being replaced by Bristol F2bs in 1918 which remained in service after the end of fighting. The general area was later used by No 60 Maintenance Unit between November 1939 and November 1945 in a non-flying capacity for the repair and salvage of RAF aircraft.
