Penston I

Major Airfield
Also known as: Penston Landing Ground / RFC Penston / Tranent
County: East Lothian
Current Status: Farmland
Date: December 1916 - January 1917
Current Use: Disused
Used By: RFC
Landing Surface Type(s): Unpaved
Aircraft Role(s): Fighter

The original airfield to bear the name of Penston was a very short-lived landing ground for No 77 Squadron on the other side of the B6363 road from its successor. No sooner had the planners requisitioned this site than a location immediately to the east was considered more suitable and quickly emerged as a replacement after only a month.
