The first Orsett Home Defence landing ground only lasted a very short while during the summer of 1916, being quickly replaced by a nearby and generally considered better site of the same name. Since that time the landscape here has considerably altered, as an Army camp later existed on the southern half of the landing area until the 1960s. Its removal subsequently saw a quarry being created until it was eventually filled in, while housing has gradually appeared on the north side.
