Many famous British comedians have links with Britain’s airfields, especially in World War Two, but the first one became famous music hall star Harry Tate who received some flying lessons here. The important Royal Aircraft Factory RE8 reconnaissance type used in World War One was nicknamed after him through rhyming slang.
