URGENT: help save Bacton, Driffield, Northolt, Coltishall and Kemble

The real crisis affecting Britain’s airfields has reached yet new levels across the country. Bacton’s former hangar, now serving as part of a garage at North Walsham, faces abrupt demolition following a freak storm that is supposed to have made the facility structurally unsafe. The roof however is still largely sound and must be saved as it is virtually unique.

Enquiries are currently being made at various local levels following ABCT intervention to see if a solution, such as holding this artefact in dismantled form, can be achieved. Contact info@abct.org.uk for details.

Meanwhile, famous Yorkshire airfield Driffield is up for sale by Defence Estates amid huge worries concerning the site, which have lasted for many years. Major support has come in from both home and abroad offering many constructive ideas but it has long become noticeable how local residents are apathetic about their neighbouring piece of real history. Check the Driffield Airfield website www.driffieldaerodrome.co.uk and its homepage for more details about how to give your support.

Battle of Britain superstar Northolt also faces a major crisis with the scheduled demolition of its hangar, adjacent mess and flight planning room, Sector Operations Control Room, and a Great War aero engine workshop. These buildings are seen as unnecessary for the future despite heavy opposition and a massively supported website petition. The Government responded negatively on February 12 2007 but there still remains a slight chance that public pressure could overturn planning thinking.

Write to MoDEL IPT at RAF Northolt, West End Road, Ruislip, Middlesex HA4 6NP or any other local concern to try and save the day.

The campaign to save coltishall continues as Jeremy Godwin has set up a petition to reopen teh airfield for civil use as its economic potential, history and popularity are all unquestionable. Support both him and Coltishall by clicking here.

Kemble is now under considerable threat as Cotswold District Council is trying to bring an end to flying here. A total of 6,759 people signed an e-petition by July 23 2007 prior to a planning inquiry to be held in November. even more than usual, this is one airfield which should never close to flying, so look at the Kemble Air Services website www.kemble.com for further detials.
