This remote grass airfield was where Rudolf Hess intended to land as a result of his highly controversial flight to Britain in May 1941. He could never have actually safely done so as Dungavel was too small for a Messerschmitt Bf 110 – but numerous strange stories such as an official reception party waiting at the airfield and landing lights being switched on for a period that night continue to linger."
